An office of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands (or "Freedmen's Bureau") was in existence in Augusta County from 1865 until December 21, 1868. During that time the Bureau aided in the founding of several churches and schools in the county and dispensed food, clothing, and medicine to both destitute whites and freedmen. It also adjudicated labor disputes, investigated cases of violence and assault, and generally assisted in the transition from slavery to freedom in Augusta County.
In the coming months, letters, reports, and other documents generated by Bureau agents and Augusta County citizens will be available from this page. We are currently transcribing and marking up each document in Extensible Mark-Up Language (XML) so that these documents will be fully searchable.
