The federal, county, and city governments kept the most systematic records in nineteenth-century America. These include population and agricultural censuses, tax digests, and for Augusta county, records about slaveowners and free blacks. Each kind of record describes a different group of people. The first three sources are common to both Virginia and Pennsylvania, although there are some differences in the types of information collected.
