First, a disclaimer: these lists are in no way intended to be comprehensive. The Web is growing by leaps and bounds, so there are plenty of sites out there that we have yet to explore. If we have omitted something, please send us some mail about it. Also, many of these sites have links to other sites, or to each other. This list is of the most general and most comprehensive sites.

CWSAC Battle Summaries
The Civil War Sites Advisory Commission presents summaries of battles by state and by campaign.

The United States Civil War Center
Housed at Louisiana State University. Its mission is to provide a comprehensive center for all Civil War interests, both scholarly and popular. It succeeds admirably in this effort.

The American Civil War Homepage
This site is maintained by the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. It has a particularly complete index of Civil War documents available on-line.

The Boyle Bronx Civil War Archive
Brian Boyle's site is strongest on regimental histories and information for present day reenactors.

Civil War Photographs at the Library of Congress
This is a keyword searchable index of the Library of Congress' collection of Matthew Brady's Civil War photographs. It's part of their larger American Memory Collection.

National Park Service Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System
The National Park service is currently creating a computerized database of everyone who fought in the Civil War. This page gives you access to some of their work in progress, as well as other NPS sites.

Civil War Sites in the Shenandoah Valley
This is another National Park Service Site. It has numerous maps and written descriptions of fifteen Shenandoah Valley battlefieds. It also addresses the problems of present-day battlefield preservation.

Augusta County

This unique local history site mixes geneological and local history material to create an archive of Augusta County information.

American History

The National Park Service
The National Park Service site offers changing features on history, archeology, cultural studies, and ethnogrophy.

The National Archives
Acess to the National Archives Clio information server, which includes information about holdings and exhibits.

The Library of Congress
This allows users to browse through digital images and textual descriptions of the Library's holdings. It also contains information on upcoming events and exhibits. The Library has just unveiled a new Learning Page for the National Digital Library Program historical collections, aimed at K-12 educators and students.

The Smithsonian Institution
This is one of the most comprehensive and exciting sites for history. Explore the Smithsonians different museums, or get information on programming, events, and other resources.

The University of Kansas Virtual Library for Historians
This no-frills site contains links to over 1000 other history sites, indexed by subeject.

The Gilder Leherman Institute of American History
The Gilder Lehrman Collection contains approximately 70,000 items relating to American history from its European discovery and settlement through the Civil War and Reconstruction. Their website contains electronic documents relating to slavery and the slave trade.

The American South Homepage
Located at UNC-Chapel Hill, The Center for the Study of the American South provides links to a variety of historical and cultural works about the South.

The Library of Virginia
The Library of Virginia (formerly the Virginia State Library), located in Richmond, has recently digitized several of its collections, including Family Bible records, the Virginia Colonial Records Project, and the U.S. Army Signal Corps Photograph Collection. Their website also provides access to the LVA's online catalog.

This project aims to both preserve and make more accessible newspapers from throughout the Old Dominion's history. It maintains several exhibits on the Web.
