The Valley of the Shadow has teamed up with The Electronic Cultural
Atlas Initiative (ECAI) to produce Geogrphic Information Systems data on
the Valley project's two counties. This effort began in the early summer
of 1999 with the digitization of Jedediah Hotchkiss' 1870 map of Augusta
County. We have put together a demonstration of the GIS work to date,
as well as an outline of our procedures and multiple thematic projects that
utilize the database's geographical and statistical information.
This is a searchable index of fire insurance policies held by Staunton
residents. The policies are then linked to maps of Staunton, allowing
you to locate individual properties.
This is a searchable index of building claims stemming from the
1864 burning of Chambersburg. The claims are tied to sections of an
1858 property map of the town.
In 1857 German artist Edward Beyer traveled throughout the Old
Dominion. His paintings were published in 1858 as the Album of
Virginia: Illustrations of the Old Dominion. We have included a
selection of plates, showing sites in Augusta county, the Shenandoah
Valley, and Harper's Ferry.
During the 1850s, David Strother, otherwise known as Porte-Crayon,
an illustrator for Harper's Weekly, traveled throughout the
Shenandoah Valley. He described his journey in Virginia
illustrated: containing a visit to the Virginian Canaan, and the adventures
of Porte Crayon and his cousins. Strother's drawings are very much
in the "local color" vein, but they are still interesting
representations.
