Other Maps from Augusta and Franklin Counties, 1865-1868

Augusta County

Jedediah Hotchkiss, the legendary "mapmaker to the Confederacy," lived in Staunton, and in the early 1870s published a detailed atlas of Augusta County. The image above shows several of the county's smaller villages. We are in the process of digitizing the streetmap of Staunton, as well as the entire map of the county, so that these can be linked with the information in the tax records, census, newspapers, historic preservation records, and other sources. This work is a collaborative effort with The Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative.
