Some of the most extensive records of nineteenth-century life were kept by state and local governments. In this section of the Valley archive are the returns from the 1870 population census for both Franklin and Augusta counties, as well as cohabitation records documenting the marriages of African Americans in Augusta County after the war. These records offer insight on the demographics of the two counties by detailing the names, ages, occupations, wealth, and other characteristics of the people who lived there.
